SAN ANTONIO -- The first automotive dealership that features all-electric vehicles will open in San Antonio on Thursday.
ZAP Electric Cars, located at Loop 1604 and Stoneoak Parkway, will offer the Zebra, a three-wheel four-door compact car. There is also a two-seat pickup available.
The vehicles will run 40 miles on a full charge, which takes six to eight hours to complete.
The dealership is owned by Tito Norris, an orthodontist who first learned about the vehicles in Austin.
Norris said that he decided to open the dealership because of the high cost of gasoline.
"I'm tired of paying $3 a gallon for gasoline," he said. "And this is something that costs 2 cents a mile to run it."
The vehicles, which start selling at $11,000, can reach a maximum of 40 mph and are not intended for highway use. No air conditioning is available.
Norris said while the vehicles need to be inspected annually, they require little maintenance.
Norris added that for every car sold, the company will plant 200 trees, the amount needed to offset the pollution of a vehicle that runs on gasoline.
ZAP, which stands for Zero Air Pollution, has about 30 dealerships across the U.S.
