SAN ANTONIO -- Prices at the pump this Fourth of July weekend are high, but not as high as they were this time last year when regular gas hovered just below $4 a gallon, according to the American Automobile Association's Web site,
DailyFuelGauge.com.
Nationally, the agency reports the average price for regular is $2.62 per gallon compared to $2.48 in Texas. San Antonio's average is 3 cents lower, $2.45 per gallon, a penny higher than Houston, $2.47 in Dallas and $2.49 in Corpus Christi.
Reaction from San Antonio motorists filling up around town varied.
"It hurt me really hard last year. It makes it a little easier this year, but it's still expensive," said Ed Cano as he stood by his vehicle he described as a gas hog.
Others like Mariah Trumps said they were sticking close to home instead of traveling over the Fourth of July weekend.
"Mostly I don't want to fight the traffic, but gas prices didn't really affect that decision," she said given she'd made plans to attend any number of Independence Day festivities in San Antonio.
