SA Goes Orange for Hunger campaign launches Thursday

San Antonio Food Bank begins campaign during Hunger Action Month

SAN ANTONIO – Last year in San Antonio, the food bank provided about 62 million pounds of food to those in need in 16 counties.

One of those people getting help is veteran John Boyd.

Boyd has come a long way in the last 18 months. Almost two years ago, Boyd had no job and was living on the streets.

"I was in a situation where I made some bad decisions, and I found myself homeless," Boyd said.

He put his pride aside and eventually asked for help. Now, he's a recent graduate of the culinary program at the San Antonio Food Bank.

"I'm very fortunate for the programs that they offer and the second chances that they give people," Boyd said.

Boyd is just one example of how the food bank helps the community.

The "SA Goes Orange for Hunger" campaign, in honor of Hunger Action Month, is a way residents in San Antonio can join in helping with the fight against hunger.

"Thirty ways in 30 days," said Eric Cooper, president and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank. "We are just asking residents of our community to choose their way in the fight against hunger."

Ways to help out include volunteering, making a contribution, setting up a food drive or just advocating.

The SA Goes for Orange campaign is also a way for the food bank to plan beyond the month of September and think ahead to the holiday season.

"We feed about 58,000 people each week, and we couldn't do that without the support of so many," Cooper said.
