2.8 million Samsung top-loading washing machines recalled

Recall follows hundreds of reports of 'explosions'

SAN ANTONIO – After hundreds of reports of exploding washing machines, Samsung and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that 2.8 million top-loaders are being recalled for safety reasons.

The recall involves 34 models sold since March 2011. To see if your machine is affected, visit https://pages.samsung.com/us/tlw/index.html.

Kristyn Ryan, of Bandera, is among the people who experienced a machine that violently came apart during the spin cycle.

"It's a ticking time bomb," she said in August, fearing someone would be injured. She said she wanted the machines recalled.

After 730 reported incidents and nine injuries, including bruises and a broken jaw, the company moved to recall them. The Consumer Product Safety Commission cited a design flaw that allowed the top of the machines to detach.

Consumers with the recalled machines should contact Samsung. The company is offering a free in-home repair, a rebate toward the purchase of any brand machine, or, if purchased in the last 30 days, a full refund.
