Former Career Point instructors face income tax dilemma

Bankruptcy attorney says W-2s coming 'shortly'

SAN ANTONIO – Four months after Career Point abruptly closed its doors amid funding problems, some former instructors are facing tax-time frustration. They don't have their federal W-2 forms yet.

Remy Chan is a critical care nurse who is dealing with the headache.

"It makes you mad," she said. "It really does."

Last summer, Chan began an extra job teaching at Career Point. In October, the vocational for-profit school shut its doors, leaving students scrambling to find a place to complete their programs. Teachers were also left hanging.

"We never got our last paycheck," Chan said.

But it's the lack of a W-2 that is her bigger concern.

When contacted by KSAT 12 News, bankruptcy attorney William Davis Jr. wrote in an email that the trustee has paid ADP LLC for the W-2s, which he said should be issued "shortly."

When an employer does not provide a W-2 form, taxpayers should inform the IRS. According to the IRS website,  there are alternate substitute forms that can be used.

With the 4852 form, taxpayers have to estimate and explain wages and withholdings. Having the last paystub can be very helpful when it comes to filling out the estimated withholdings.

Chan hasn't lost sleep over the missing paycheck, but is stressed about the missing W-2 form.

"I have to answer to the IRS now," she said. "That's something else."

Chan said she hopes she does not have to file for an extension and end up paying interest to the IRS.
