San Antonio home sales steady, strong

Condo sales booming

SAN ANTONIO – By the time the pumpkins appear on porches, homebuyers are typically scarce, settling in for another school year and looking at holidays on the horizon.

Not this year: In September, 2,608 homes were sold, a 9 percent jump over the same period one year ago.

"Despite low inventory, sales are still doing great," said Sara Gerrish, with the San Antonio Board of Realtors.

Prices continue to steadily creep up, too. The median price of homes sold in September was $204,000, which is 6 percent more than last September.

The single-family house is the biggest seller, but condo sales are booming, too. So far this year, condo sales are up 8 percent over what they were a year ago.

Downtown, in particular, is a magnet for young professionals.

"I love it," said Jennifer Edwards. "No. 1, I'm close to work, close to dog parks and the food and the culture."

Edwards said a condo purchase may be in her future. But it's not just young professionals looking for the condo lifestyle.

"You see people move into condos who don't want to deal with outside maintenance or people purchasing their first property or people wanting to downsize," Gerrish said.

The healthy job market and continued low-interest rates are credited as reasons for the strong housing market.

Last year set a record for home sales and this year is on pace to beat it.
