The perfect grilled cheese sandwich? Toastabags put to test

Products claims to make grilled cheese in toaster

SAN ANTONIO – The perfect grilled cheese sandwich? Toastabags put to test

A grilled cheese sandwich may be the perfect rainy-day lunch, but can you make one in your toaster?

A product called Toastabags claims to let you do just that.

KSAT college intern Selina Nadeau helped put the product to the test.

"Grilled cheese with soup. My mom always made it, especially when it rained," she said.

The box came with three sandwich-sized bags.

"They feel like vinyl sort of," Nadeau said.

The bags are coated with PTFE, otherwise known as Teflon.

First, Nadeau buttered the bread and put two slices of cheddar in the middle.

When it came time to slip them into the bags, though that was a little tricky with the messy butter. Testers found it would be easier sans butter.

Next she dropped the bag into the toaster.  After waiting 2 minutes, Nadeau had what looked and smelled like a grilled cheese sandwich.

She gave it a thumbs up, as long as you use bread sliced that aren’t very big.

"Definitely fitting it in the bag was difficult because I usually use bigger bread than this, because I like a big sandwich," Nadeau said.

The bags can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. The box claims you can reuse a bag 50 times.

The Toastabags tested were purchased at Sur La Table for $8.95. Toastabags can be found online as well.

For the final test, Nadeau took a bite.

"Mmmmm," she said. "Tastes just right."

Ads for the bags say they can also be used for heating up various products including pizza.
