Runner Collapses, Dies At Rock 'n' Roll San Antonio Marathon

Participant Identified As Jorge Fernandez, 32

SAN ANTONIO - A participant in the Rock n' Roll San Antonio Marathon collapsed and died shortly after completing the run Sunday, organizers said.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office identified the runner as Jorge Fernandez, 32, of San Antonio.

"It is with great regret that we confirm the loss of a participant at Sunday's event," event organizer Tracy Sundlun said in a statement. "We are deeply saddened as both race organizers and as fellow runners, and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the participant's family and loved ones. We ask everyone to respect the family's request for privacy, and to keep them in your thoughts and prayers."

This is the first time that a participant has died in the four years in the event has been held in San Antonio.

Other participants at the race said Fernandez had just finished the half marathon when he collapsed. A neighbor of Fernandez' said that he appeared to be in good shape and that she was shocked to hear that he had died.

"That devastation, I mean, it's hard enough when someone is sick and you are prepared for it," said Laura Wilson. "But, whenever something like this happens, you can't prepare for something like that."

Temperatures Sunday reached up to 79 degrees during the marathon and race officials said dozens of runners had to be treated for heat related injuries, some were even taken away in ambulances.

Race officials did not confirm if heat was a factor in Fernandez's death. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy will be conducted Monday.
