Man escapes from police, falls 20 feet from I-35 overpass
Witness: Man was escaping from police
SAN ANTONIO - A man is in the hospital Monday afternoon after escaping from police, then jumping off an Interstate 35 overpass and falling 20 feet to the ground below.
According to San Antonio police Sgt. Jay Vinson, Johnathan Gomez, 20, was handcuffed and had escaped police custody after being arrested on a felony warrant charge of possession of a controlled substance.
Witness Robert Garcia said the man leaped over the bridge over Salado Creek.
Garcia said he was at the Shell station off New Braunfels when he saw the man watching a police unit pull in with lights flashing.
Garcia said the man made eye contact with the officer, then took off running.
The man was taken to SAMMC with a broken back and head injuries.
