DEA: Arrests, indictments wipes gang from San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO - Authorities arrested six Texas Syndicate gang members Thursday, a move that knocks out the gang in San Antonio, according to DEA officials.

In an indictment returned Wednesday, 17 suspects are accused of at least four murders, drug trafficking and other crimes. The six arrested Thursday were indicted on racketeering charges. The others are already in custody on other charges.

The Texas Syndicate originated as a prison gang in the 1970s. The group is extremely dangerous and has been operating without regard for law enforcement or their own family members, according to DEA agents.

"The community should be at rest knowing that the dedicated leadership in this room and the men and women behind the scenes, working 24 hours, seven days a week, away from family were committed to in fact taking those subjects off the streets," DEA agent Mauricio Fernandez said.

U.S. Marshal Robert Almonte said these arrests send a clear message to gang members.

"We're not going to put up with it," Almonte said. "We're going to stay on their tail and we're not going to let them catch their breath. We're making it as difficult as possible for them to operate in San Antonio."

The arrests and indictments are the results of an 18 month investigation in which officials also confiscated four vehicles, semi-automatic handguns and drugs.
