Holiday gift returns not as chaotic this year

Many shoppers say they have no returns

SAN ANTONIO - With the holiday gift buying season on shaky ground because of a lackluster economy, retailers worried that Monday would yield lots of returns, dealing a blow to their bottom lines.

But there were not many returns at one big local store and plenty of people were shopping for bargains.

Cash registers ringing was heard quite a bit today at this store as shoppers took advantage of huge after-Christmas discounts.

Mike Henry was one of those shopping.

"We came here to buy chocolates stuff for gifts and ended up buying a few other things, but I found some workout clothes that were on sale," Henry said.

Charlotte Carter was bargain shopping.

"Christmas is 50 percent off so that's good," Carter said.

Cathy Henry found goodies as well.

"The little gift bags, the lunch size bags are like twelve cents," Henry said.

One surprise for Dwain Lewis, the assistant manager at the Target at 1604 and Blanco Road, has been the lack of returned merchandise this year.

There have been lines at the return desk but sometimes it has been empty.

"We're not seeing returns as we thought we were going to see so either everyone had a really great Christmas and they got what they wanted or maybe guests and consumers are just holding back a little bit before they start returning," Lewis said.

Things were slower than many people expected at the noon hour both in the store and out in the parking lot.
Maybe it was because fewer people had things to return.

Peggy Reihner was just shopping.

"Don't have to return a thing this year," Reihner said.

Another man said his budget kept him shopping carefully.

"We made lists two months ago," he said.

Making a list and checking it twice seems to have kept returns down.

Now isn't that nice?
