Woman accused of planning bank robberies
Yesenia Ortega charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery
SAN ANTONIO - A Southeast side woman who’s believed to have been the mastermind behind at least two local bank robberies has been arrested.
Yesenia Ortega, 21, is charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.
An arrest affidavit stated Ortega was already in custody in connection with a case in San Antonio when Bexar County sheriff’s investigators learned that she was also a suspect in a case in China Grove.
The affidavit stated the most recent robbery happened on Halloween at a Wells Fargo Bank in the 6800 block of U.S. Highway 87 East.
The affidavit stated two men tackled the bank manager as he was opening the bank for business, muscled their way inside and tried to force him to open the safe.
The building alarm went off, however, scaring off the suspects, the affidavit stated.
While investigating the case, sheriff’s deputies received a call from San Antonio police, telling them Ortega had admitted to helping plan and recruit people for the China Grove bank robbery.
The affidavit stated Ortega was being questioned by SAPD at that time about a separate bank robbery in San Antonio.
The affidavit did not state whether the men who robbed the bank have been arrested.
