Defenders Blog: Employment Offers

The KSAT 12 Defenders answer your questions

SAN ANTONIO - We frequently get questions in our Defenders mailbag about employment offers that could be scams:

Has anybody ever heard of a company called "Mintel"?  Wondering if the company is legit or a scam?  I got a "Contractor's Agreement" for a customer services evaluator, along with a check for $4400.00

It all sounds pretty legit, but again with so many scams out there I was just wondering if you would be interested in investigating whether or not it is?

It claims to be supported by the BBB.....

Please let me know either way so I can go to the next step.

The first question here would be: did you contact the company first?  Or did their offer just show up in your email?

Be wary of offers that are just mass marketing emails.   However, if you contacted the company regarding employment, it could be legitimate.

  • Does the “contractor’s agreement” include a phone number for an actual person?
  • Does the information sent to you show an address of where the company is located?

If so, you might want to do research online and check out the company.

As far as the $4400.00 check goes, take it to your regular bank or credit union, and have them look at it.

They should be able to tell you whether it’s legit or not.

And this is important: don’t ever take bait where you’re asked to send the company money first to “cover” their check.  That’s a definite scam.

Finally, Mintel is not accredited in Texas by the Better Business Bureau.  But they are accredited in Chicago and have an A+ rating there.

For future reference, you can search businesses on the National Better Business Bureau website.

Just be careful.  There are a lot of scams out there.  It’s always good to be extremely cautious.
