Ford sentenced to 40 years in death of ex-girlfriend
Jury: Jon Thomas Ford killed Dana Clair Edwards
SAN ANTONIO - Jon Thomas Ford was found guilty of killing his ex-girlfriend, Dana Clair Edwards, on New Year's Eve 2009.null
On Friday, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner, Edwards was strangled.
Three months earlier, Edwards had ended their two-year relationship.
"It has been a hard fought trial and that jury has paid very close attention," said prosecutor Catherine Babbitt. "And, we couldn't be more pleased with the guilty verdict and we certainly couldn't be more pleased with the significant prison sentence."
However, Ford's defense attorney, Dick DeGuerin said he was disappointed with the verdict and believes some of the jurors still had doubts.
"This has been a tragedy for both families," said DeGuerin. "And, it's a double tragedy because an innocent man has been convicted."
During the trial, prosecutors argued that cell phone records and security camera video show Ford was at Edwards' Alamo Heights condo the night of the murder.
Ford told police he left a New Year's Eve party they both attended and then went straight home.
Despite admitting the case contains circumstantial evidence, prosecutors argued that there was enough for a conviction.
Immediately following the verdict, family members of the victim met with jurors and thanked them.
"This has been an emotional trial," said Babbitt. "It's been a long time coming for the family. They have waited three years for this day and Ii think the jury sensed that and saw that and I think they just wanted to come out and say, "I'm sorry."
Despite the warm words from the victim's family, Rich Aguillon, who was a juror in this trial, said it was no easy task.
"We took everything into consideration," said Aguillon. "The family, the other family, our personal feelings about the things that were going on, so, yeah, it's a hard thing to do."
