Goodwill offers free tax preparation service in San Antonio

VITA program at 3 local Goodwill stores now through April 17

SAN ANTONIO - Free tax preparation will be available at three San Antonio Goodwill locations now through Tuesday, April 17, for households making $55,000 or less.

The Goodwill stores will serve as a location for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, a collaborative effort between multiple agencies that offers free tax preparation services to low-income families.

Trained VITA volunteers will be on site to help individuals complete all necessary tax forms and help identify eligibility for special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or Disabled.

Free electronic filing will also be available.

The service is available at the following Goodwill locations:

•        13311 San Pedro Avenue (Highway 281 and Bitters Road):  2 p.m. - 7 p.m. Monday  through Thursday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Saturday.

•        12332 I-10 West at DeZavala Road:  1 p.m. - 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Sunday.

•        3401 Fredericksburg Road at Vance Jackson:  1 p.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday.

Each participant must bring a valid driver’s license or photo ID, social security cards or individual tax identification numbers for all members of the family, wage and earning statements, a prior year tax return, bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit, total paid for daycare provider and the provider’s tax identification number.

To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-jointly tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.

Participation in the VITA program is part of Goodwill’s Good Choices program, an initiative to help low-income working families with financial, health, career and work supports.

“Offering the VITA program in our stores is one more way that Goodwill helps families keep more of what they earn,” says Bob Dugas, president and CEO of Goodwill. “With help from VITA, families can claim deductions and credits that they might otherwise miss without trained help.”
