Landlord finds home trashed after weekend raid
At least 20 suspected illegal immigrants found in 2-bedroom house
SAN ANTONIO - Eva Castillo said she was uncertain if the tenant who rented her two-bedroom house about a year ago was from Honduras, Mexico, or somewhere else.
But, the landlord said the woman in her 50s had a food truck.
"She makes a living, so I didn't ask if she had her papers," Castillo said. "She said she was from Houston."
Castillo said that her tenant paid her $650 monthly rent on time, kept the yard well-maintained, and had flowers and other plants growing around the house in the 4300 block of Commercial on the city's South Side.
"I rented the house to this lady, and just her," Castillo said. "I saw the news and I said, 'what?'"
Castillo was shocked when she found out that an estimated 20 suspected illegal immigrants were discovered in her home on Saturday night during a raid by San Antonio police.
Castillo said she was worried people may think she was involved.
"I didn't know what she was doing," Castillo said.
But Castillo said late last year she noticed trucks coming and going, and what appeared to be several visitors for the holidays.
When asked about it, Castillo said the tenant told her they were relatives.
Castillo said her rental house was left trashed, with used bedding in the living room and two bedrooms and clutter upended throughout the small home that has only one bathroom.
"It's a mess. It stinks and everything," Castillo said. "I can't believe so many people were here."
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not confirmed whether the tenant was among those taken into federal custody.
