Students get ready for 'STAAR Wars'

Teachers hold pep rally for students before testing

SAN ANTONIO - Teachers at Rhodes Middle School in the San Antonio Independent School District gave 7th- and 8th-grade students the star treatment before they became some of the first students in the state to take the new STAAR test, which replaces the TAKS as the mandatory assessment test for Texas public schools.

The pep rally had a "Star Wars" theme and featured several teachers in costume, including 8th grade teacher Robert Alfaro who wore the intricate facial makeup as Darth Maul.

"It's a great opportunity to show that the teachers are behind them," said Alfaro. "It's an opportunity for us to do something for the students and to get them involved and a fantastic way for our students to show their spirit."

"All of them are great teachers and they're lead by a good principal and they all do their best to work on us with the subjects and get us ready for the STAAR test," added 8th-grade student Christian Lozano, who helped put together some of the videos played during the pep rally which offered students tips for the tests.

Fourth-, fifth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students begin testing on Tuesday, March 27.

Third- and sixth-grade students begin testing April 24.
