KSAT Ball Hog Blog: NFL skeds, Spurs-LA series top week that was
SAN ANTONIO - Sometimes I really hate the NFL. Why do you have to be so awesome, so cool, so Dos Equis Most Interesting Man in the World-ish?
I intended this blog/article to be about soccer because I knew my five faithful fans (thanks Chloe my dog) would much rather read about footie, but once again, the NFL rules all.
So I have no choice but to start the KSAT Ball Hog Blog's Top Stories of the week with 'The Shield'. (Apologies to Michael Chiklis)
2012 NFL schedule released: Cowboys-Giants kickoff the season on Wednesday (Sept. 5) instead of Thursday because of President Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention. I'll be honest, they could play the opener on the day of the presidential election and I'd still watch Cowboys-Giants.
Back to the Boys: I've said it for years, the NFL loves to watch Dallas inevitably fall apart in December. This year is no different with late home games against the Eagles, Saints and Steelers. Maybe they want Jerry to watch the collapse on that huge video board.
Texans on prime time: Houston gets five prime time games this season including it's first Thanksgiving game. Congrats Texans, you're officially AFC favorites. Is that good or bad? We'll find out.
More schedule shenanigans: You're also gonna see a lot of the Steelers, Pats, Saints, Packers, Niners and Denver Peytons on prime-time and don't forget Tebow-mania in NYC! God, sweet baby Jesus or Tom Cruise please help us.
How can I forget about my Vikings. Minny's opener against Jacksonville is considered the worst of the weekend. They play no Monday or Sunday night games. Expectations are low. They may not even be in Minnesota next year. But does this matter to me? Heck no, this is the NFL, I'm pumped. At least it's not Saints coach Sean Payton's schedule that reads "BYE" weeks 1 thru 16.
Spurs stuff: After tearing through their west coast swing, the Spurs are atop the conference standings and get Los Lakers again Friday. Is anyone getting bored of watching these two play each other? No way! Three games in nine days, possible West Finals preview, Kobe could be back...sneaky Stern knew what he was doing all along.
Tankfest 2012: Speaking of the end of the NBA season. The teams who have no shot for the playoffs are tanking at an unbelievable rate. The bottom half of the NBA might as well be the D-League. How do the Pistons (yes my Pistons) beat the Cavs by 40 points, then lose by 40 the next night. The Bobcats are pathetic. (I guess that hasn't really changed) Can the playoffs just begin already.
Pat Summitt resigns: Anytime you have a court named after you (Awesome name by the way: The Summitt), you're an icon. Summitt retires with the most wins in college hoops history men or women. Legendary status no doubt and I get the feeling she would have had no problem coaching men either. Just a great coach overall.
Pudge Rodriguez retires: I'm not the biggest baseball fan, but the guy is an all-time great catcher. Countless all-star nods, Golden Gloves, an MVP award and most impressive...Pudge won the World Series with the Marlins. I repeat...the Marlins!
Kentucky declares for the draft: These guys could have beaten the Bobcats.
Dwight Howard out for playoffs: And the Lebron James award for most unlikeable NBA player of 2012 goes to D-12. Seriously Dwight, Lamar Odom thinks you threw in the towel.
Texas A&M shirt gaffe: So what if A&M mistakenly added the state of North Carolina in their new conference T-shirts. At least they spelled SEC right. Geography is apparently not a strong suit at A&M. They should fit right in.
Champions League semis: Better believe I'll get into this more next week. Four of the world's top clubs battling for European supremacy. Stunning first-leg upsets by Bayern Munich and Chelsea. A reason to go to a bar during the day. I knew there was a reason I love soccer.
Finally...Tebow, Lin named most influential: Whatever happened to that whole Linsanity thing? And Tebow again...I'm just trying to fill my mandated Tebow mentions quota. Like I said, the NFL rules all.
