SAN ANTONIO - Tuesday was the kickoff of the city's new pilot program, allowing food trucks in designated areas of downtown, including HemisFair Park, Maverick Park, and the annex lot across from City Hall.
The hope is to bring a new type of flavor to downtown.
"We're thrilled. We hope more people come and check it out," said Rachel Holland, with the HemisFair Park Redevelopment Corp. "There's something about gourmet food trucks that are really exciting and hot right now, so I think it's really going to attract a lot of people into the park and downtown area once it gets going."
From burgers to cupcakes, the trailers will feature a variety of different foods, with a gourmet flair.
"We've all been to restaurants, we're creatures of habit," said Luis Sandoval, an app developer who is a fan of the trucks. "The food truck movement offers variety, it offers a chance for people to explore the city in different locations."
Vendors say they hope will work for years to come.
For vendors, they're hoping the program is a successful one, and the city will continue to allow them downtown.
"Today was OK," said Lucas Whelchel, owner of Blazin' Burgers. "It was a little slow start, but when more people find out we're here, a lot more people will turn out."
The pilot program runs through Oct. 1.
