Billboard reaches non-theists in San Antonio

'Club' refers to alliance of 6 groups

SAN ANTONIO - A billboard asking drivers, "Don't believe in God? Join the club," reaches out to non-theists living in San Antonio.

The club is the San Antonio Coalition of Reason, an alliance of six non-theistic groups in South Texas.

"There is the Atheist Families of San Antonio, the Humanists of San Antonio, Texas Hill Country Free Thinkers, San Antonio Atheists, and Free Thinkers Association of Central Texas," said Jim Parker with the San Antonio Coalition of Reason.

The billboard is not be a new idea.

"All you need to do is Google 'Think God,' and you'll see billboards supporting one position or another regarding God," said Parker.

Parker insists that the billboard in San Antonio isn't intended to be controversial.

"There's no threat to any religion by the presence of the billboard or the various groups represented in the San Antonio Coalition of Reason, so they should not feat us," he said.

Parker said a conservative estimate is that 12 percent of San Antonions are non-theistic, equaling about 100,000 people he hopes the billboard reaches.

"We are not trying to convert people to be non-believers. We're not trying to get people to drop their faith," said Parker. "We just wanted to let them know there are places for them to meet in a communal-type fasion."

The San Antonio Community of Congregations issued the following statement about the billboard:

"San Antonio contains a strong faith community that is diverse and growing.  Our faith community has many different belief systems and  ideas of “God” and what it means to believe in a higher power.   In America, we have freedom to believe in a higher power as well as the freedom to believe that there is no such thing as a higher power.   In our opinion, the San Antonio Coalition of Reason is simply advertising their belief system and asking if there are other like-minded people out there."
