Family keeping vigil over injured girl, 4
Girl’s mother, her boyfriend charged with injury to a child
SAN ANTONIO - Relatives of a 4-year-old girl who San Antonio police said suffered a severe beating are keeping vigil at her hospital bedside, praying she survives.
Mary Jo Martinez, a cousin of the child’s great-grandfather, said “it doesn’t look good” for the girl.
She identified the child as Kayla Garcia, 4.
Early Tuesday morning, police arrested the girl’s mother, 20-year-old Melanie Garcia (pictured above), and her boyfriend, 23-year-old Matthew Carrillo (pictured below), on a charge of injury to a child.
Police said Kayla Garcia was brought to Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital Monday night with bruises all over her body and possible cigarette burns. They said she also suffered a head injury so severe that she had hemorrhaging behind her eyes.
The girl later had to be flown by helicopter to University Hospital for further treatment.
Police said the charges against the couple could be upgraded if she does not survive.
Detectives said the beating happened at a home in the 300 block of Laverne Avenue.
