At an icon with an icon

Part of what I've always loved about my job as a KSAT photojournalist is the adventure. I get to go and see and do things all over our fair city.

Today, after a shoot on the South Side with reporter Jessie Degollado, we decided to grab lunch. She suggested that we go to Bud Jones Family Restaurant. Now, I had seen this place (probably well over a hundred times) in my travels, and had always wondered about it. Apparently this place is known for being the first real seafood place on that side of town. It is, I'm told, a San Antonio icon.

We meandered in and immediately, Jessie was recognized. I heard "oh, we love you" and "I've watched you for years" and similar phrases more than I could count. It was at that point that I had an epiphany... I was at an "icon" WITH an icon.

We sat and I asked Jessie "How many people do you think just spoke to you?" Her answer, "I don't know, three or four?" I replied "Try three or four times that many."

It goes well beyond simple  recognition. It's been my experience working with Miss Degollado for more than a decade that she is the real thing. Not only is she a quality journalist, but an incredible person. She has the ability to make people feel comfortable, and the skills with which to tell their stories. She gives a piece of herself to every story she covers, no matter how insignificant they may seem to others.

Her years of service have certainly been noticed by the people of San Antonio, and I wanted to take a second to thank her publicly as a  both co-worker and admirer. Thanks, Jess!
