Commissioners begin budget review
Report: Revenues down, cuts coming
SAN ANTONIO - Bexar County Commissioners are taking their first look at the county’s budget situation for the fiscal year 2012 through 2013.
County Judge Nelson Wolff says that this year, some trimming – as in years past – will be needed in order to come up with a balanced budget.
“We’re right back at (where) we have been having to do for the past four to five years: looking for additional cuts,” Wolff said.
He said that there must be a way to trim skyrocketing costs of employee health care benefits.
“I think we’re definitely going to have to tighten up the benefits on health care,” said Wolff. “I don’t think we have any choice but to do that.”
The judge also said commissioners will be taking a close look at the jail as a way to trim costs.
The County Manager said that lower revenues due to less property tax revenues makes his task of bringing commissioners a budget that is balanced at the current tax rate will be a challenge.
