SAISD seniors treated to farewell bash

Event aims to build excitement for college

SAN ANTONIO - Graduating seniors in the San Antonio Independent School District were treated to a farewell party at Alamo Stadium on the final day of school.

The event gave students a break from the classroom, but the goal was to get them excited about heading to college.

"It beats being in a class, bored, watching movies," said Brackenridge High School Senior Diego Solis.

Highlights included a DJ games, giveaways and a chance to mingle.

"This is actually the first year that we're doing this and it's really just a fun day for students to celebrate 12 years of hard work, but at the same time, look ahead and celebrate what they're going on to next," said district spokeswoman Michelle Jimenez.

College themes have been engrained in these students since they were in the sixth grade, the first students to have taken part in the district's "Gear Up" program.

"The whole 'Gear Up' thing helped everybody to know what ... college is and that it's attainable (and) that you can actually get scholarships and money for that stuff," Brandon Mojica, a Lanier High School senior, said.

"They've always been after us to continue in college and make sure we had a plan and to graduate, of course," said Stacy Martinez, a Fox Tech High School senior.

Jimenez said SAISD hasn't yet tracked how many graduating seniors plan to go to college but most students seemed to have a plan for the future.

"I'm going into UT's Liberal Arts college up in Austin," said Solis

"I'm going to Hamilton College in New York State," said Jeanette Parra, Brackenridge High School senior. "It's really exciting and scary at the same time, because this just means the last day of being a kid. After this it's the real world."
