Retama Park expects overflow crowd for live racing, Belmont Stakes
First live races of season to coincide with Triple Crown chase
SELMA, Texas - Retama Park opens its live racing season this weekend and overflow crowds are expected for Saturday's Belmont Stakes. I'll Have Another could become the first Triple Crown winner in more than 30 years. Affirmed last won the triple crown in 1978.
The race will coincide with the start of live racing at the track. Retama Park's 2012 season opens Friday night. One race, the Selma Stakes, was split into two divisions to accomodate the 20 entries.
"It's a nice problem to have," Racing Secretary James Leatherman said in a statement. "And it's great we have the purse money to run two stake races opening night."
Live racing begins at 6:45 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. Gates on Saturday will open at 9:30 a.m. to accomodate the crowd for the Belmont Stakes.
