Live racing set to run at Retama
Track ready to host Quarter horses
SAN ANTONIO - The live Quarter horse racing season starts Friday night at Retama Park Racetrack.
There was plenty of excitement about the seeing the ponies run Friday afternoon.
"(I'm) really excited. This is where we live," said trainer Toby Keeton.
One reason for all the excitement is the track's new owners.
Pinnacle Entertainment group bought the track, but are still waiting on final approval.
Track officials said things are looking up.
"Were up about 12 percent over last year's first quarter” said Doug Vair, spokesman for the track. "With the addition of the Pinnacle people coming in and putting their stamp on us, we expect more attendance (and) more wagering to help the purse structure. All of that is very positive."
The ones who come to play the ponies agree.
“(We) needed a change,” said Monty Miller, who is looking forward to a fun racing season.
While the Quarter horse season starts June 8 and runs through August 11, with live racing every Friday and Saturday night, the thoroughbred season starts in October.
