Site of proposed children's hospital remains undecided

Consultant: Medical Center 'desired' location

SAN ANTONIO - At a special meeting of the Bexar County Hospital District board of managers, Juliet Rogers, president and CEO of Blue Cottage Consulting, repeated the findings of a study that showed the Medical Center is the “desired” location for a proposed free-standing children’s hospital

“All we looked at was to position this competitively and to be affordable in using existing land,” Rogers said.

George Hernandez Jr., the district’s president and CEO, said several factors will determine the best location.

“One of those factors is proximity to where physicians are currently practicing and to where the population is moving,” Hernandez said.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said last month the consultants believed it was a better site.

“But that’s up to whoever builds it. That doesn’t mean it will be built there,” Wolff said.

Hernandez said several proposals are in the works from Methodist and Baptist Health Systems, as well as the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Interest came after University Hospital had pulled out of negotiations with Christus-Santa Rosa.

Yet in April, Christus-Santa Rosa announced its landmark downtown location will be known as the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, with plans for expansion.

Leni Kirkman, University Hospital spokeswoman, said when it comes to a future partnership, “All doors are still open, including Christus-Santa Rosa.”

Pamela Gibson, who lives on the southeast side, said being on a tight budget, if her little boy needed to be hospitalized, she would take him downtown.

“A lot of times it’s extremely difficult to get around. If I needed to care for him, I would need it to be close to me,” Gibson said.

However, Jeri Lynne, who lives in Atascosa County, said downtown would be more convenient, but she would take her special needs teenage daughter to the Medical Center.

Lynne said it has more options for daughter, “Orthopedic, neurology, anything that will accommodate any kind of sickness the children have.”
