SAPD: Robbery suspects had baby in getaway truck

Melissa Garcia, Anthony Murry arrested after gas station robbery

SAN ANTONIO - San Antonio police officers got quite a surprise Wednesday afternoon when they stopped a vehicle involved in a robbery and found a 1-year-old child on the floor of the truck.

Investigators with SAPD's Robbery Task Force said 31-year-old Melissa Garcia walked into a gas station in the 1300 block of Hildebrand just after 4 p.m.

She allegedly gave the clerks a note demanding money and threatened she had a gun.

The clerks handed over the cash and took down the license plate of the getaway vehicle Garcia got into.

Officers pulled the truck over about 13 minutes later near IH-10 and Woodlawn Avenue. As they were taking the suspects into custody, police found the baby lying on the floor of the truck.

"The reaction of all the officers was surprise," said Detective Efrain Gonzalez. "We're just glad that quick thinking officer spotted that car and was able to recover that baby without incident and the baby seemed to be in good spirits and good health."

Police said 32-year-old Anthony Murry was the driver of the truck.

Gonzalez said Murry had a small amount of narcotics on him. Murry was booked on drug possession charges and endangering a child.

Garcia will be charged with robbery and endangering a child.

Investigators aren't sure why the child was in the truck or its relationship to either of the suspects. The baby was not hurt and was reunited with family members.
