SAN ANTONIO - At first glance, it seemed like an ordinary swim lesson at the Heritage Neighborhood Association swimming pool.

But, upon closer inspection, it became clear that there was nothing ordinary about it.

Several dozen young swimmers in training took part in a worldwide effort to set a Guinness record for the world's largest swimming lesson.

A total 24 countries on five continents joined 46 U.S. states in the global lessons -- but it wasn't just for fun.

The event aimed at driving home the message home of just how important swimming safety is, especially for young people.

According to the World Health Organization, drowning is third leading cause of unintentional death in the world.

On Thursday, instructors taught swimming tips and safety guidelines.

One instructor said the most important thing to remember is always find a partner when you go swimming.

Another tip that may seem obvious was to teach your children how to swim. Research shows if a child hasn't learned to swim by the age of 3, they likely never will.
