Son gives father gift of life
Son donates kidney for transplant surgery
SAN ANTONIO - Felix Gonzalez has had diabetes for 30 years. He found out last year he would need a kidney transplant at some point.
But this year, around February, the situation became worse and doctors said he would need a transplant soon.
"There toward the end, they started deteriorating faster and faster," Felix said.
Gonzalez didn't have much to fear, though, and he didn't have to look far for a kidney donor. His oldest son, Paul, wanted to step in and help.
"It's better than the tie I normally get him every year," said the young Gonzalez.
Not only was Paul a match, but he was in perfect health to give the gift of life to his dad.
"He gave life to us and it's something that's very special that I've been blessed with the opportunity to give back to him; keep around a lot longer," he said.
The surgery took place Wednesday at Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital in the Medical Center. This father's day, Felix is moving around, feeling healthy, and looking great.
The journey to transplant and the road to recovery has left Gonzalez and his wife, Sylvia, two extremely faithful people, so much to be thankful for.
Sylvia says she had to lean on God's promise more than ever.
"Was it easy; a piece of cake, like people say? No," she said.
Felix is looking forward to returning home to Corpus Christi and getting back to work. Paul knows this Father's Day, especially, is one to remember.
"He's been our foundation, our solid rock of the family," he said of his dad.
Like any challenge, this tested the Gonzalez family's faith. Sylvia said it only made their beliefs stronger and their faith in God and one another more durable.
"Just trust," Sylvia said.
