San Antonio Area Foundation hands out college scholarships
SAN ANTONIO - The San Antonio Area Foundation handed out $1.3 million in college scholarships Wednesday night.
The scholarships were awarded during a ceremony at the University of the Incarnate Word to 200 students who will attend colleges and universities in the 2012-13 academic year.
"It is inspiring to see so many young people who understand the value of education and a pleasure to be a part of awarding these scholarships. Each one of these young men and women has truly earned what they are receiving," said Dennis Noll, president and CEO of the San Antonio Area Foundation. ""When we help students succeed and build successful careers, we make life better in our community."
The scholarships handed out Wednesday are in addition to 193 previously awarded scholarships that will be renewed for the coming school year.
Bernice Uresti, SAAF Program Officer For Scholarships, said many of the recipients wouldn't be able to go to college without the help of scholarships, which they earned through a lengthy application process.
"Some of our students are first generation college students, so we try to bring them here to celebrate their accomplishments, to celebrate together," Uresti said.
