2 killed in 18-wheeler crash on I-10

Driver, passenger crushed by pipes being hailed by rig near Ralph Fair Road

SAN ANTONIO - Two people died in a crash late Thursday night that involved two 18-wheelers in far northwest Bexar County.

Sheriff's deputies say one of the big rigs rear-ended the other around 11 p.m. on Interstate 10 West near Ralph Fair Road.

Investigators said the second rig was carrying metal pipes and the pipes shifted forward during impact, went through the cab and crushed the driver and passenger.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the first big rig was not injured.

Deputies are investigating the crash, but said the first driver apparently slowed down and the second driver did not notice.

I-10 West remained shut down for hours while officials cleared the scene. The names of the victims have not been released.
