Man wielding Samurai sword shot by brother-in-law

SAN ANTONIO - A man who sheriff's officials said was wielding a Samurai sword tried to attack his brother-in-law early Friday morning.

Francisco Sandoval and his wife were at their home in the 7,000 block of Richter when Sandoval's brother-in-law, Ramon Cruz, stopped by.

According to sheriff's officials, Cruz tried to attack Sandoval with the sword. Sandoval then got a gun and fired a warning shot into the ground, sheriff's officials said.

Cruz then lunged toward Sandoval causing the gun to fire again, hitting Cruz in the groin.

Cruz was taken to University Hospital for treatment. After Cruz is released from the hospital, he'll be jailed on a aggravated assault charge.

Sandoval will not face charges.

Sheriff's officials were unsure what prompted the attack.
