Former mayor likes District 35 chances
Susan Narvaiz running against Lloyd Doggett
SAN ANTONIO - Susan Narvaiz has the resume.null
She was the mayor of San Marcos, is a successful businesswoman, and grew up in San Antonio.
But her opponent, Lloyd Doggett, has been in the U.S. House of Representatives for 17 years. Narvaiz is hoping people think that almost 20 years of Doggett is enough.
"I think the main points are, I've lived in the real world recently. This is a race that's going to be determined by ideals, and it's also a race that's still going to be determined by voters, not by an individual that just assumes that because I'm there I get to go back," said Narvaiz.
She could benefit from the newly drawn District 35. Doggett is known in Austin, but not so much in San Antonio Even with new territory, the district leans Democrat.
"I think the American people today are searching for servant leaders, and with that in mind, I think anyone that steps up and shares their values and their vision for what our country can be, will be the person they vote for," said Narvaiz.
She admits as mayor of San Marcos, she and U.S. Rep. Doggett’s paths crossed, but she was not an active supporter of Doggett’s.
As his Republican challenger, she believes the things she's talking about may be more in tune with the country.
"It hasn't mattered to what group we are asking, what is important for our country going forward. Those three things -- balance the budget, quit the spending, limit the federal government -- are on the top of their minds," she said.
Will that message resonate? Narviaz will find out the answer in less than five months.
