Schertz leaders plan downtown revitalization

Residents, business leaders provide input

SCHERTZ, Texas - Main Street in historic downtown Schertz going to get a makeover soon, but designers say it probably won't be anything too drastic.

"Maybe a few more buildings, maybe a little bit of living downtown, a few more restaurants, but I don't think you really have to reinvent it," said Scott Polikov, with  Gateway Planning Group. "I think you have to build on it."

To make sure the design team is going in the right direction, they went on an hour-long walking tour with city leaders, residents and business owners, to see what they had in mind.

"One thing we expect to hear from folks now is to be sure to capture that history of Schertz so when you're down here, you know you're in downtown Schertz," said Schertz Executive Director of Development Brian James.

Polikov said the design team's vision of downtown Schertz could end up looking something like Broadway, just north of downtown San Antonio.

"Think of how Broadway, for example, is connected to all the great neighborhoods up and down Broadway in San Antonio," said Polikov. "If we can make that connection here in Schertz, like San Antonio has in the neighborhoods on Broadway on a smaller scale, I think we'll be very successful."

Designers are limited by their budget -- only a million dollars in bond money for revitalization.

The hope is to inspire the community to help

"That's really the key ... encouraging private investment by the public sector, making it easy for them to do the right thing," said Polikov

Several public meetings are planned to make sure residents can help decide the look of the future.  .

Monday at 6:30 p.m.., a second design "charette" will take place at the Schertz Civic Center, to address an area in North Schertz.

And on Tuesday, an open house will be held at the Civic Center to further discuss downtown revitalization plans That will take place between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The Civic Center is located at 1400 Schertz Parkway, building No. 5.
