Motel murder concerns residents
SAN ANTONIO - A murder at a motel on San Antonio's South Side has residents concerned about crime in the area.
Joshua Solis has lived with his grandmother on the South Side, not far from Roosevelt Street, his entire life, and said as long as he can remember, there have been problems with prostitution, drugs and violence.
"I really want to get my grandmother out of here. I want her to move with me but this is her house and she doesn't want to move," Solis, 22, said
Early Sunday morning, Solis received a frantic call from his grandmother. She said a man had been murdered down the street.
A man in his late 30s was shot to death at the Royal Inn Motel, police said.
Solis said he is fed up with the crime.
"The neighborhood around here is just really hectic," Solis said.
The Royal Inn Motel and two others on Roosevelt have been a problem for some time.
In October of 2010, city leaders attempted to deem them nuisance properties in an effort to get them shut down.
City Council member Leticia Ozuna represents the district the hotels sit in.
A spokesperson with her office said Sunday she would not comment until she had more information on the issue.
San Antonio Police Office Matt Porter said they have received around 75 calls to the Royal Inn Motel this year, and that they're aware of the issues.
Porter said they've increased the number of officers on patrol in the area, and plan to continue targeting the area until they see an improvement.
