USO serves as home for servicemen
KSAT to host phone bank benefitting USO on Monday
SAN ANTONIO - The USO on Market Street is a special place for some of our country's bravest men and women.
It's got everything you can think of -- pool tables, computers, a large kitchen, and even its own theatre room.
"This is their USO. This USO is meant to be a home away from home for them," said USO Director, Shari Jenson. “So when they walk in, we don't want them to think they're walking into another military facility."
The 5,000 square foot complex provides active duty military a place to hang out and kick up their feet, while also providing comfort to troops and their families.
Jenson said despite the hustle and bustle of downtown, it's the perfect place to just get away.
"They do have the support on the base, but they want to get off the base,” said Jenson. “We're a great connect to the city, and they get to experience the River Walk, but yet they have this safe haven right here."
There are more than 160 USOs in the world and two in San Antonio.
Each USO is funded through private donations and function with the help of volunteers.
"We've got some really, really generous donors,” said Jenson. “Whether they're donating a dollar every month, or once a year, we appreciate it so much.."
Beginning at noon on Monday, KSAT 12 will be hosting a phone bank where you can call in and pledge donations benefiting the downtown USO.
