Greater Chamber of Commerce hosts second fireworks display at Hemisfair Park
'Stars and Stripes over San Antonio Fireworks Spectacular' begins at 9:30 p.m.
SAN ANTONIO - When it comes to celebrating our nation's birth, San Antonio decided one fireworks show isn't enough.
In addition to the city-sponsored 4th of July celebration and fireworks at Woodlawn Lake Park, local business leaders are having another Independence Day party at Hemisfair Park downtown.
The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and several other sponsors are hosting the "Stars and Stripes over San Antonio Fireworks Spectacular."
Will Garrett said the event is designed to bring more people to the heart of downtown for a traditional Fourth of July celebration and at the same time, honor our men and women in uniform.
"We really wanted to do something for them. The Woodlawn event is a great event but we also know a lot of the military come downtown, are familiar with downtown, so we wanted to do an event where they could come out with their families and feel celebrated," Garrett said.
The party was set to kick off at 6 p.m. with live bands performing up until 9:30 p.m. when the fireworks show will start.
In addition to traditional food vendors, several mobile food trucks were on hand to serve up their unique cuisine.
According to a news release, the fireworks show is being run by Spectrum, a nationally recognized company that is best known for their large firework displays in Houston and on the Mall in Washington D.C.
While Hemisfair Park hosts the annual New Years Eve party and fireworks, Garrett said this Independence Day fireworks display will be much bigger with larger and louder bombs bursting in air.
"We were able to get an 8-inch shell and, not to get too specific, but you have different size shells. The 6-inch shell is what they use at New Years and it goes up roughly 600 feet in the sky. The 8-inch shells will go up 800 feet," Garrett said. "So it should be a big show and then also, in terms of length for the New Year's show, it's about 15 to 16 minutes and this will be about a 20-minute show."
