Bizarre details emerge about pedestrian accident
Witnesses told police that victim was followed by man in gorilla suit
SAN ANTONIO - Bizarre details have emerged about an incident on Highway 281 near Bitters Road involving a pedestrian who was hit by a car.
A police report identifies Paul Nimnicht, 31, as the man who was hit shortly after midnight Friday.
A witness told police he heard Nimnicht (pictured) saying that he wanted to kill himself just before he ran onto the southbound lanes, the report said.
According to Officer Matthew Porter, spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, it happened after Nimnicht left a nearby bar without paying his tab.
The description given by witnesses, though, paints an even stranger picture.
“There was an employee of the bar that followed him,” Porter said. “He was dressed in a gorilla costume. At that point, he was trying to catch up to our victim."
It turns out the man in the gorilla suit was a mascot for Coco Bongo, a bar on nearby Embassy Oaks Drive.
The business owner said his employee was not chasing Nimnicht at the time, but following him. He said Nimnicht had been in the bar just prior to that, talking about his troubles.
“If this individual was indeed going through some sort of mental crisis, obviously we want to get him help,” Porter said.
Physically, he should be OK. Nimnicht was rushed to University Hospital, where he’s listed in stable condition.
