Friday the 13th lucky day for local families

Over 50 children given forever homes

SAN ANTONIO - While Friday the 13th may be an unlucky day for some, it was quite the opposite for 13 local families.

The families welcomed new additions into their homes on Friday at Child Protective Services’ Adoption Day Ceremony.

Among those adopting children were Daniel and Yvonne Rios, whose journey to parenthood began when they weren’t able to conceive.

Now,  they have three bright and happy children who have changed their lives forever.

"It's a really big deal to us. It's like the birth of our three kids in one day,” said new father Daniel Rios. “It's the greatest day of the year so far."

Like the Rios family, the Mendoza's are equally as happy.

"It means so much,” said new mom Rachel Mendoza. “She's ours, she's our officially. It's been like she's been ours for a year now, but she's officially ours, so it's great."

The Mendozas met their 3-year-old daughter, Joseline, a year ago, and now she’s a permanent member of their family.

"She's already a family member. We love her,” said Mendoza. “We couldn't be without her. We've been waiting for this day forever."

As many as 13 families all shared the joy on Friday, as more than 50 children were adopted at the ceremony.

Each family -- and each child -- had a different story.  But in the end, the smiles and joy they experienced was shared as one.

"It just means a lot that a lot of families are taking in kids that don't have a lot of help,” said new father James Bond. “It means a lot that these parents are taking in these kids.”
