NE side home focus of 'Hoarders' TV show

CPS removed 4 children found living in squalor there

SAN ANTONIO - A cable TV show that focuses on people with hoarding disorders is shining its spotlight on a Northeast side family and their home.

A crew from the show “Hoarders,” which airs on the A&E cable network, has been working at the home on Walnut Creek Drive since sometime in early July, according to neighbors.

"I just saw them hauling out a bunch of stuff. I just figured they were moving,” said Michelle Fain, who lives across the street.

Fain said in the past, she has noticed a lot of clutter visible through the home’s windows. Still, she was surprised to see the TV crew arrive.

“It’s really weird because I watch the show,” she said.

Apparently, the home has also received some attention from local authorities recently.

Child Protective Services removed four children, ages 5-9, from the home on June 8 after workers allegedly found them living in squalor.

An affidavit describes conditions inside there, saying the home had bug nests in the walls, items stacked everywhere and an odor so bad that workers had to wear masks.

The report said the home had black grime on its floors, and animal and bug feces everywhere.

It also said there was no air conditioning, and although there were nine refrigerators, there was no food that was fit to eat.

Workers said they found a tent in the backyard with a pillow and blanket inside, according to the report.

It appears, however, that someone other than CPS workers called the TV program.

A spokesman with the San Antonio Fire Department confirmed that during filming Sunday, paramedics were called to treat a woman who lives there for an apparent overdose. The 51-year-old woman was transported to a hospital.

The show’s producer said she and her crew were forbidden from disclosing any information about the home or the family who lives there.

The residents were not home at the time of the renovations.

A “Hoarders” staffer said the episode featuring the family will air some time during the new season, which begins in August.
