S.A. veteran to accompany First Lady at Olympics
Paralympian Gabriel Diaz De Leon to attend Opening Ceremony with Michelle Obama
SAN ANTONIO - Local Paralympian, war veteran, and San Antonio native Gabriel Diaz De Leon will join First Lady Michelle Obama for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Summer Games.
Diaz De Leon and five others will travel to London next week to accompany Obama as she meets with U.S. athletes, and encourages American children to be active in their daily lives.
A graduate of John Jay High School, Diaz De Leon first became involved in the Department of Veterans Affairs' national games and special events after he was injured in 1984.
In 1988, he traveled to South Korea where he competed against other paralympians in track and field events. Since then, he has competed in Greece and Australia.
"(Participating in the games) has made me more aware of what I'm capable of doing and what I can achieve by staying active and being out in society," he said.
This year, Diaz De Leon coached paralympians in the San Antonio area in the discus, shot put and javelin events.
