Tiffany James: 'I only wanted to scare him'

SAN ANTONIO - In halting sobs, Tiffany James, who was 17 years old at the time, admitted to police that she stabbed her boyfriend to death.

In her taped interview played for the jury in her murder trial Friday, James said a heated argument between her and 18-year-old Antwan Wolford, also the father of her son, preceded the stabbing

“It was just to scare him off -- that’s it,” James sobbed.

She described how she grabbed a kitchen knife as the couple struggled, pushing and shoving each other.

“I stood up, I had the knife in my hand and I just jabbed it into his chest,” she said.

She claimed Wolford was holding her head and pulling her hair as he threw her onto a bed.

After stabbing Wolford in the chest, she said, he turned away.

“He still has my hair while he is walking and I had to do him one more time in the back,” James said.

She said she stabbed Wolford in self-defense, saying she feared for her life.

“I (didn't) want him to die, I just wanted him to stop hitting me,” she said.

The couple had a 2-year-old son together, born when James was 14. They had been living at her sister’s apartment, where the murder occurred.

Her lawyer said James was planning to leave Wolford when he showed up at the apartment on Nov. 20, 2009.

Testimony will continue on Monday in James murder trial in Judge Juanita Vasquez-Gardner’s 399th District Court.

If she is convicted, James is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison.
