Friends raise money for man injured in car accident
Thomas Contreras injured in crash on 1604 near 281
SAN ANTONIO - The family of a man who survived an accident last Saturday is getting some help.
Friends of Thomas Contreras are raising money to help his family pay for his medical bills.
Contreras was involved in an accident on 1604 near 281. He was rear-ended by another driver, who died.
However, when he got out of his car to help another driver, he was hit by another vehicle on the highway.
"I wish he would have stayed in his car," said Lisa Ybarra, a friend. "But, that's Thomas, that's how he is. He's just there to help somebody when they are in need."
Contreras was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.
On Sunday, friends spent the afternoon hosting a volleyball tournament to raise money for Contreras's family.
"He's that guy that you go to whenever you are having a problem," said Ybarra. "When you need somebody to lift your spirits and to see him in that kind of condition feels very surreal."
Although Ybarra said they have a long way to go, she said the amount of support they have had so far has been overwhelming.
"Even all the support he's gotten it's pay and repay," said Gabriela Hernandez, another friend. "Treat others how you want to be treated. So, I think all the community is come together and actually supported him so, he was just doing something he loved to do."
Ybarra said as of Sunday, Contreras was still in ICU but that he was in stable condition.
