The couple, both in their teens in November 2009, had argued, according to James’ statement.

She said Antwan Wolford, her boyfriend and father of her 2-year-old son, had pushed her onto a bed and pulled her hair.

She said she grabbed a knife to scare him and stop him from hitting her.

On Monday, a police officer testified that the couple had been involved in violent domestic arguments in the past.

Officer Tom Sowell read from a previous police report.

“They got into an argument because he accused her of cheating on him,” Sowell said. “When she attempted to leave, he blocked the door and she pushed him and he grabbed her and threw her to the ground."

James’ lawyers say the stabbing and the previous argument support their claim that she acted in self defense each time.

Testimony will continue on Tuesday in Judge Juanita Vasquez-Gardner’s 399th District Court.

If she is found guilty, James is facing a maximum sentence of life in prison.
