CANYON LAKE, Texas - A Converse man drowned in Canyon Lake in Comal County Tuesday, the sheriff's office said.

Witnesses said Eugenio Lara-Martinez, 35, was walking along the rocky shoreline while talking on a cell phone near the 500 block of Corps of Engineers Road Overlook Park at around 1:45 p.m. Lara-Martinez was about 60 yards from the swim beach area, witnesses said.

No one saw Lara-Martinez go into the water and it is unknown how he ended up in the water, but witnesses found him floating 4 to 5 feet from shore in about 6 feet of water, deputies said.

Rescue workers tried to revive Lara-Martinez but could not. He was pronounced dead on the scene. He was a Mexican National, originally from Celaya, Guantajo.
