Rest­aurants highlight Texa­s-produced food

Go Texas Restaurant Roundup continues through Sunday

SAN ANTONIO - The special of the week at Josephine St. Cafe has a decidedly Texas flavor. That's because is fried shrimp farmed right off the Texas coast.

The popular cafe is one of dozens of area restaurants taking part in the Go Texan Restaurant Roundup sponsored by the Texas Department of Agriculture.

The restaurants, ranging from fancy and upscale to quick and casual, are featuring menu items made from regionally-produced seafood, steaks, fruits, vegetables, cheeses and even beer and wine.

The idea is to support Texas farmers, ranchers and commerce.

"We are really at a point in time when buying things made in the USA, locally grown, are big for people," said Nicole Celli with Josephine St. Cafe. "Farmers' markets have been huge successes."

Chef Johnny Hernandez at La Gloria has long been a proponent of using locally-produced ingredients for everything from his fish tacos to his ceviches to watermelon salads.

"The flavor of local, seasonal, ripe fruits and vegetables is something we search for," he said.

Hernandez takes pride is cooking Texan. The hope through the program is that diners will be just as proud to eat Texan.

Katie Palmer, eating lunch with her family at Josephine St. Cafe, said she liked the idea of dining on homegrown ingredients.

"I'm new to Texas," she said. "It's good to find out what it's all about  here."
