The fire started just before 11 a.m. in the 200 block of Los Nietos Lane.

Investigators said there may have been a fourth victim -- had it not been for a neighbor coming to the rescue.

"It was just smoke. I didn't see no flames," said Jeremiah Armstrong, a next door neighbor, who ran to the smoke-filled trailer home.

Armstrong said he was smacked in the face with thick black smoke when he kicked in the front door of the mobile home. He rushed next door when he heard a young girl screaming for help from inside.

"I heard the little girl screaming, so I just wanted to go in and try to get her," Armstrong said.

The 13-year-old girl was standing at a window yelling for help when Armstrong tore off a window air-conditioning unit and pulled her to safety. That's when he learned the rest of her family was still trapped inside.

"She said that her two brothers were still inside and her mom," Armstrong said. "I wanted to go back in there but my mom told me no."

Guadalupe County Fire Marshall Kelly Kistner identified the dead as a mother and her 15-year-old son and her 5-year-old son.

"With three of the four in the house having perished, it was a fortunate thing that the neighbor came by and was able to help her out," Kistner said.

According to Kistner, the fire appears to have started in the living room area. Two of the victims were found in bedrooms, while a third was found in the bathroom.

Kistner said he's still trying to figure out why the family was trapped in the small trailer.

"At this point, all we know is that the fire appears to have originated within the living room," Kistner said. "We're still working on the cause of the fire and as far as why they could not get out, we do not have those answers at this time."
