Mom delivers baby in car
2nd child in family born in car
SAN ANTONIO - Bryanna De Leon plans to create many memories with her new son, Justus Casarez, born Monday afternoon.
It will take a while for her to have a better story to tell than their first adventure together, when he was born in the car on the way to the hospital.
"My doctor was kind of speechless about it," said Bryanna, adding that her son wasn't due until Aug. 17.
She began to feel pain around 5:30 a.m. on Monday but said the contractions were only seconds long so she decided to go to work.
Around noon the pain increased and she went home.
A few hours later, the contractions were lasting nearly a minute so she and her mother got into her Chevy Malibu to go to the hospital.
Just as they were turning onto Medical Drive off Fredericksburg Road to go to St. Luke's, she told her mom the baby was coming.
"She just told me, 'Mom I feel pressure,' and I said, 'Please don't push,' and she just pushed," said Rachel Hernandez, her mother.
"I hurried up and took off my pants and pulled him out myself," said Bryanna. "It was a relief to get him out. I was trying to hold him in but I couldn't."
She doesn't even remember which entrance to the hospital she arrived at -- she was just happy her new son was healthy.
He did save her from a hefty medical bill but kept Bryanna from making sure he will be the baby of the family.
"They were supposed to tie my tubes after labor but it didn't happen like that," Bryanna said.
Bryanna showed unusual calm during the whole episode -- as did her mother. It makes sense ,since she's been there before.
"It was an experience," said Hernandez. "I had my son in a car too."
"Her mother had the fourth child in the car and Bryanna had her fourth child in the car," said friend Tiffini Flores, who was driving behind Bryanna. "Four seems to be the unlucky number so I'm going to stop at three."
And Justus may be only a day old but Tiffini has already found a nickname that will stick for a long time.
"I'm calling him 'Bu' because he was born in a Malibu," said Flores. "So 'Bu' is his name for me."
