SW Side apartment fire displaces 40

Alta Vista apartment building on Hutchins catches fire, cause unknown

SAN ANTONIO - Several people lost their homes after a fire broke out at a Southwest Side apartment complex Monday evening, fire officials said.

Fire fighters were called to the Alta Vista Apartments in the 2800 block of West Hutchins Place just after 10 p.m.

Crews arrived to heavy smoke and flames that spread to two units and forced the evacuation of an entire building.

Fire officials say a total of 40 people were displaced, however there were no reported injuries. The Red Cross provided 11 families temporary shelter at a local hotel in addition to financial assistance to help replace groceries, clothing and bedding damaged in the fire along with comfort kits filled with personal emergency supplies.

Damages were estimated at $200,000. The cause of the fire has not been determined, fire officials said.
